Roles

Machine Operator

a manufacturing professional who sets up and runs production machines to make parts to drawing, program and quality specifications

Your job, minus the screen work

You set up, run, measure and stop the machines that make the parts. That work is hands and eyes. The paperwork that feeds it is not, and when it is wrong, you find out at the machine.

Where your week goes

  1. Walking to the office for a drawing that never made it into the packet
  2. Waiting on a reprinted traveler after a quantity change
  3. Finding at first piece that the inspection form is a revision behind the drawing
  4. Hunting the program folder for a file whose name does not match the part
  5. Typing job and operation numbers because the traveler barcode will not scan
  6. Stopping a job quality says should never have been released

What an agent takes over

The agent works on office screens: the ERP, the drawing vault, the program library and shared folders. It never touches the machine.

What stays with you

  • Setup, prove-out and loading the program at the control

  • Listening to the cut and catching what no table can

  • First-piece and in-process measurement

  • Stopping the machine, and every safety call

Apps you already juggle

ERP, MES, shop-floor terminals, barcode scanners, drawing vault (PDM or PLM), CNC program library, Excel, SharePoint or OneDrive, Teams and Outlook.

A week, before and after

Before

  • Two walks a shift to the office for missing documents
  • A first piece that fails because the form was out of date
  • Jobs started that quality then stops

After

  • A packet flagged complete, one revision on every document
  • One barcode scan to start the operation
  • Held jobs listed in the lead's shift message, not discovered at the machine
  • The first hour spent setting up, not waiting
