For cabinet shops & architectural millwork teams

Turn Cabinet Sketches into CAD Drawings

LaunchAI converts hand-drawn cabinet sketches, field measurements and plans into CAD drawings, cabinet layouts and shop drawings. The agent builds the room, places cabinets from your library, checks dimensions and flags missing information. Your designer reviews the drawing before it moves to quoting, cut lists or production.

For drafters, engineering leads and owners at custom cabinet and architectural millwork shops

Monday, 7:15. Four field measures and a release date.

The measure techs came back Friday with the usual: graph paper folded in quarters, wall runs taped to the 1/16", windows drawn as a gap with "36" next to them, a ceiling height in one corner, and a photo of the outlet layout that's mostly thumb. The KD's 2020 plan for the same kitchen has a different window. The GC on the dental office sent the architect's set with "VIF" on every dimension that matters. And there's a voicemail from Ray: "end wall's out about 3/8, top's out."

So you open Cabinet Vision and build the room again. Walls, ceiling, soffit. Every opening with its height off the floor and its casing. Appliances from the spec sheets, not the KD's guess. Then the boxes from your library, the fillers at the corners, the scribe on the end panel, the uppers sized to whatever ceiling you decided to believe. Elevations, submittal, redlines, release to engineering. On the commercial side it's Microvellum and AutoCAD, and the same retyping with AWI details on top.

Nobody else in the building can do it, so it waits on you. And the expensive mistakes never look like mistakes on paper: a box 1/2" too wide for the opening, crown that won't fit under the ceiling, an upper that runs into the window casing. You find those at install, with the truck already back at the shop.

What the job looks like today

  1. Decode the measure

Three pages of graph paper, a photo and a voicemail, for one kitchen.

  2. Build the room

Walls, ceiling, openings, casings and appliances, by hand.

  3. Place the boxes

Library cabinets, fillers, scribes and uppers sized to a ceiling you hope is right.

  4. Chase the gaps

Text the tech about the window height, email the KD about the fridge.

  5. Redline round two

The approval drawing comes back marked up and you start again.

Where it goes wrong

The measure was right. What it meant is the problem.

A field measure is a tape reading plus forty things the tech knew and didn't write down. These are the ones that come back as a remake.

  • Which corner is 8' 1"?

Ceilings aren't flat. One reading in one corner, 42" uppers and a crown to the ceiling, and you're 1/2" short at the other end of the run. That's a site cut on a finished upper, or a new crown detail.

  • Window to the glass, or the casing?

"Window 36" might be the sash, the rough opening or the trim. The upper next to it has to clear the casing, and 3-1/2" either way decides whether you need a filler or a different box.

  • "Fridge 36" isn't a box size

A panel-ready column needs the exact opening off the spec sheet, the panel thickness and the hinge side. The KD plan just says REF. Build to the plan and the panel won't close.

  • Out of plumb, out which way?

"Out 3/8" with no arrow could mean scribe the end panel, add a filler, or shim the run. The tech knew. The drawing has to say.

Why it's still manual

Where cabinet design software still needs manual input

Cabinet design software handles layouts, cut lists, estimating and production output. LaunchAI converts field sketches, measurements and specifications into CAD drawings and cabinet layouts in that workflow.

  • Your CAD and quoting software

Build on your existing design tools

Cabinet Vision, Microvellum and Mozaik provide design and production capabilities. LaunchAI converts the supplied cabinet sketches and dimensions into CAD drawings, builds the room and cabinet layout, and flags unclear information for your designer.

  • Generic AI and OCR models

    Readings still need validation

Reading text from a photo is only one step. Foot marks, arrows and uncertainty notes must survive the conversion, and missing dimensions must stay unresolved. The examples below illustrate the kinds of errors the review needs to catch.

  • Image-to-CAD converters

Dimensions matter as much as linework

Tracing a sketch into vectors can help with linework. For a field sketch that is not to scale, the cabinet layout also needs the written dimensions, appliance specifications and shop construction rules.

  • Measuring apps and configurators

Handle the paper that still arrives

Laser measures and room-scan apps are great for techs who use them. Your measures still come in from three techs, two designers and a GC, and half of it is paper.

How the agent does it

From cabinet sketches to CAD drawings in your existing software

The agent reads your sketch and specifications, checks the dimensions, then builds the room and cabinet layout in your existing software using your library and rules. Unclear details are flagged for your designer; the drawing stays in review until a person approves it.

  1. Reads everything that came in

Measure sheets, plans, spec sheets and voicemails, with a confidence score on each value.

  2. Checks the tape math

Runs must add up to overalls and openings must fit their walls, before anything is drawn.

  3. Builds the room

In your Cabinet Vision or Microvellum, with your library, your fillers and your scribe rules.

  4. Asks only what it must

One ceiling reading? It drafts the text to the tech instead of picking a number.

  5. You approve and release

Confirm the flagged value, adjust the layout, and it goes to engineering.

Your workflow

From sketches to shop drawings in your cabinet building software

Cabinet building software turns cabinet dimensions and construction settings into the documents your shop uses to build. LaunchAI converts handwritten sketches, field measurements and plans into a CAD drawing in your existing software, using your cabinet library and rules.

Your designer checks the layout and resolves flagged dimensions before approving the drawing. Depending on your software and configuration, that approved model can then feed shop drawings, parts lists, cut lists and your existing production workflow.

FAQ

Cabinet sketch-to-CAD: common questions

Can LaunchAI convert handwritten cabinet sketches into CAD?

Yes. LaunchAI converts handwritten cabinet sketches, field measurements and specifications into CAD drawings, cabinet layouts and shop drawings. It builds the room and cabinet layout from the supplied information and flags unclear dimensions for your team to review.

Which cabinet design software can it work in?

LaunchAI agents work through the screen with your team's logins. This workflow illustrates Cabinet Vision; other cabinet and drafting tools include Microvellum, Mozaik, KCD and AutoCAD. Confirm your software version, library and workflow with us using a sample job.

Does it make design decisions or follow our library and rules?

It builds the room and places a first layout from your library and construction rules. For a woodworking shop, confirm the cabinet types, materials, joinery and hardware your library is configured to use. Design decisions, and the final drawing, stay with your designer.

What happens when a dimension is missing or unclear?

The agent flags the gap, drafts the question to the tech or designer, and holds that part of the drawing until someone answers. It does not treat an uncertain reading as an approved dimension.

Who approves the drawing before cut lists or machining?

Your drafter or engineering lead. Nothing is released to engineering, cut lists or machining until a person approves the drawing, and every value shows where it came from. Your existing cabinet software handles the downstream quoting and production outputs.

Can it do commercial millwork from an architect's set?

Yes. LaunchAI converts field-verified dimensions and architectural plans into CAD drawings for reception desks, casework and panelling in Microvellum or AutoCAD. Unverified VIF dimensions are flagged. Your drafter reviews the shop drawings and AWI details.

Can LaunchAI work with cabinet building software that produces cut lists?

LaunchAI converts cabinet sketches into CAD drawings in your cabinet software. Your team reviews the drawing before release; cut lists and other production reports depend on that software's features and your configured cabinet library.

Does LaunchAI generate CNC toolpaths or G-code?

The workflow shown here covers sketch-to-CAD conversion and drawing review. CNC output depends on your existing CAD/CAM software, machine configuration and production checks; we would confirm that workflow during the demo.

Do we need to change our software for cabinet design?

LaunchAI prepares the draft in the software your shop already uses. Bring a sample sketch, the software version and your cabinet library to the demo so we can confirm the room-building, drafting and approval steps for your setup.

Is LaunchAI freeware cabinet design software?

LaunchAI is a sketch-to-CAD agent that converts cabinet sketches into CAD drawings. For a DIY project, check which planning, export and cut-list features your chosen tool includes. For a shop workflow, bring your cabinet software and sample sketches so we can confirm the conversion and drawing outputs you need.

Can a cabinet shop use this workflow without CNC equipment?

Yes. The work shown here is converting field information into a CAD layout and shop drawings for review. A shop can use approved drawings with its existing manual cutting and assembly process. Cut-list reports depend on the cabinet software and construction setup you use.

Can it use a kitchen designer's plan alongside field measurements?

Yes. The kitchen plan supplies layout intent; field measurements and appliance specifications supply dimensions to check. When the sources disagree about a window, ceiling or appliance opening, the draft flags the conflict for your designer rather than treating either version as approved.

Can the CAD drawing support 3D cabinet views?

The views and renders available depend on your cabinet design software and the model it contains. LaunchAI prepares the room and layout for review in that software. Confirm the required plans, elevations and 3D presentation outputs with us using a sample job and your software setup.
