Turn Truss Sketches into CAD Layouts

LaunchAI converts contractor sketches and builder plans into CAD drawings. Create truss layouts, placement plans and quote drawings from the supplied dimensions. The drawing is built from the supplied measurements, notes and specifications. Unclear details are flagged for your team to review.

For truss designers, techs and estimators at component plants, and the inside sales and takeoff desks at lumber yards that quote them

6:15 AM. The contractors were at the counter before the coffee was.

The pile is already there. A sketch on the back of a pick ticket: a rectangle, "28x60 shop 6/12 2' OH", and "10" heel?" squeezed in by the corner. A builder's 14-sheet plan set where the roof plan says "trusses by others" and the elevations disagree with it. A photo of a chalk line on a slab. Outside sales texting that the Kessler barn needs a number by noon, and a voicemail that says "vault the great room, he'll know what I mean."

So you open SAPPHIRE or IntelliBuild and build it. Wall lines and bearings, span to the outside of the plate, pitch, heel, overhang and tail cut. Spacing, gable ends with the drop for outlookers, girders over the door headers, the ground snow for that county. Then the layout goes in the design queue, and somebody at the yard starts the wall and sheathing takeoff in BisTrack or Paradigm off the same sketch, typing the same numbers a second time.

None of it is hard. All of it matters. A truss built four inches short doesn't stretch, a wrong heel moves the fascia line and the insulation, and in April the yard that gets the number back by noon gets the whole package: trusses, lumber, sheathing and the next three houses.

What the job looks like today

  1. Read the sketch

Work out what was measured, from where, and what "vault" means today.

  2. Build it in software

Bearings, spans, pitches, heels, tails and loads, by hand.

  3. Chase the gaps

Call the framer about the heel and the overhang. Wait.

  4. Send to design

Layout goes in the designer's queue behind forty others.

  5. Type it again

The yard does the stick takeoff off the same sketch.

Where it goes wrong

A truss is the one thing on the job nobody can trim to fit

The lumber package forgives a bad number with an extra unit. The trusses don't. These are the notes that turn into a field fix or a re-run.

  • Span to the outside of what?

Truss span is outside of top plate to outside of top plate. The contractor measured the slab, the block, or the inside of the walls with drywall on. Each one is a different truss.

  • "Vault" is half a spec

A vaulted great room means scissors. Scissors need a bottom chord pitch, and the drywaller, the HVAC guy and the light fixture all care what it is. The sketch says "vault."

  • Overhang, measured how?

24" level off the wall and 24" along the rafter are different tails. Add a plumb or square cut and a fascia board and the eave line moves on every truss.

  • The heel the insulation needed

R-49 blown in won't fit over the wall plate on a standard heel. If the contractor wanted an energy heel and didn't say so, you find out when the insulator calls him.

Why it's still manual

Software hasn't fixed this. Here's why.

Component plants run some of the best engineering software in construction. It all starts after somebody types the building in.

  • Your CAD and quoting software

    Waits for someone to type

MiTek SAPPHIRE, Alpine IntelliBuild and Simpson's component software design and engineer trusses beautifully. They need bearings, spans, pitches and loads entered by a person who has read the sketch and the plan set.

  • Generic AI and OCR models

    Confidently wrong

A chat model reads "28'4½" as 28.45, treats "6/12 3/12" as two unrelated fractions, and fills in a heel height that looks typical. Nothing tells you which values it read and which it made up, and in trusses a made-up value gets built.

  • Image-to-CAD converters

    Traces lines, not intent

Image-to-CAD tools trace the rectangle on the pick ticket. You get a box in a DXF with no bearings, no pitch, no overhang and no idea which wall is the gable.

  • Measuring apps and configurators

    Only if everyone uses them

Plan takeoff tools and contractor portals work when you get a clean PDF. The yard still gets the guy at the counter, the photo of the slab and the framer's voicemail, and that's a lot of the business.

How the agent does it

From sketches to CAD drawings and layouts

LaunchAI converts the sketch and its measurements into CAD geometry, applies your drawing standards and prepares the related order information. Missing dimensions and unclear notes are flagged for your team to review.

  1. Reads what came in

Sketches, plan sets, photos and voicemails, with a confidence score on every value.

  2. Applies your rules

Your county loads, default cuts and heels, gable types and shipping limits.

  3. Lays out the job

Opens SAPPHIRE or IntelliBuild and builds the layout the way your best tech would.

  4. Asks only what it must

No heel height? It drafts the text to the contractor instead of guessing.

  5. Your designer approves

Confirm the flagged heel; the job goes to design and the quote goes out.

FAQ

Lumber yards & truss plants: questions we hear

Does it replace our truss designers?

No. It does the layout entry your techs do before design. Your designers still run the design, check the girders and send the sealed drawings through engineering exactly as they do now.

Can it work in MiTek SAPPHIRE or Alpine IntelliBuild?

Yes. LaunchAI agents use your software through the screen with your team's logins, the same way your techs do. There's no integration, plug-in or import file to set up.

What if the sketch doesn't give a heel, an overhang or the loads?

The agent never guesses a structural value. It flags the gap, drafts a short question to the contractor or outside sales, and can lay out on your yard defaults with the assumption written on the quote, if you allow that.

Who signs off before anything is designed or built?

Your people. The agent stops at the layout and the quote. Every flagged value has to be confirmed by your designer or estimator, and nothing goes to design, engineering or the saw without that approval.

Can it do the lumber package too?

Yes. The same sketch becomes a wall, sheathing and fascia takeoff in BisTrack, Agility or Paradigm Estimate, so the yard isn't typing the building a second time.

We mostly get builder plan sets, not napkins. Does it help?

Yes. It reads the roof plan, elevations and sections, and flags where they disagree with each other before your tech builds the layout on the wrong one.
