Turn Landscape Sketches into CAD Plans

LaunchAI converts landscape and hardscape sketches into CAD drawings. Create dimensioned patio, wall and site plans for material takeoffs and estimates. The drawing is built from the supplied measurements, notes and specifications. Unclear details are flagged for your team to review.

For designers, estimators and owners at landscape design-build and hardscape contractors

March, 7:30. The phone's been ringing since the snow melted.

Your salesperson walked six backyards last week. What came back: a clipboard sketch with the house wall, a patio drawn freehand with "24 x 16?" and a circle for the fire pit; tape readings off the back door with a note that the yard "falls toward the fence"; a homeowner's Pinterest board; a photo of the old railroad ties with "replace w/ block, 3' high" written on it; and a voicemail asking if the outdoor kitchen can have a grill and a fridge.

So you draw it. Patio outline, curves, steps off the door, seat wall, fire pit, beds. Then take it off: square feet of pavers by pattern with waste, base depth times area, bedding sand, edge restraint in linear feet, wall face square feet, block courses, caps, geogrid if it's tall, drain pipe behind it, cut-and-haul for the excavation. Then the estimate, line by line, in the spreadsheet or the estimating software, then the drawing the customer actually signs.

It's two hours a bid and you're bidding against three other companies, in a season that's only so long. Miss a buried course on the wall or the base under the steps and you've given away the margin; take a week to send the design and somebody else is building it.

What the job looks like today

  1. Read the sketch

Work out the patio size, the wall height and what "falls to fence" meant.

  2. Draw the plan

Every edge, curve, step and wall in the design software, by hand.

  3. Take it off

Pavers, base, sand, edge, block, caps, grid, excavation.

  4. Price it

Line by line, labor and equipment, in the estimating tool.

  5. Chase the gaps

Call the customer about the pavers, text the salesperson about the wall.

Where it goes wrong

The margin was gone before the excavator showed up

The sketch is a nice picture. The money is in the parts of the job that aren't on it.

  • Wall height above grade

"3' wall" is what shows. Add the buried first course and the cap and it's more block, and possibly a wall that needs geogrid, drainage and an engineer.

  • Seat wall to the cap or the block?

18" seat height with a cap on top is fewer courses than 18" of block plus a cap. Your bid and your crew need the same number.

  • Base doesn't stop at the pavers

Six inches of base under 384 SF is the start. The base runs past the edge, under the steps and under the seat wall, and the sketch shows none of it.

  • Grade falls toward the house

"Yard falls toward fence" was measured on the other side. The patio pitches to the door unless someone sets the slope away from the house.

Why it's still manual

Software hasn't fixed this. Here's why.

Landscape companies have design software, estimating software and satellite measuring. The bid still starts on a clipboard.

  • Your CAD and quoting software

    Waits for someone to type

DynaSCAPE, Vectorworks Landmark, SketchUp and AutoCAD draw a beautiful plan and some will take it off. Someone still has to read the salesperson's sketch and draw every edge, curve, step and wall by hand first.

  • Generic AI and OCR models

    Confidently wrong

Generic AI reads "24 x 16?" as 2416, drops the question mark, and tells you the wall needs 30 blocks with no idea it's 3' tall with a buried course. Rendering tools make a pretty picture; neither gives you a takeoff you can bid.

  • Image-to-CAD converters

    Traces lines, not intent

Image-to-CAD converters trace the freehand patio. You get a wobbly outline in a DXF with no dimensions, no base depth, and no idea the circle was a fire pit.

  • Measuring apps and configurators

    Only if everyone uses them

Satellite measuring tools get you square footage of a lawn. They can't see the old railroad ties, the step off the door or the 3' grade change behind the house.

How the agent does it

From sketches to CAD drawings and layouts

LaunchAI converts the sketch and its measurements into CAD geometry, applies your drawing standards and prepares the related order information. Missing dimensions and unclear notes are flagged for your team to review.

FAQ

Landscape & hardscape: questions we hear

Can it work from a salesperson's clipboard sketch?

Yes. Freehand sketches, tape readings, photos and site plans. It reads every dimension and note, scores how sure it is of each, and flags the ones it can't confirm.

We design in DynaSCAPE and estimate in SynkedUP. Do we need an integration?

No. LaunchAI agents work through the screen with your logins, on your machines, in the same design and estimating software your team uses today.

How does it know our base depths and waste factors?

You set them once: base and sand depths, overdig, waste by pattern, wall rules, step rise limits, production rates. They live in a rules table you can change, and every takeoff shows which rule it used.

What happens when the wall height or patio size is missing?

It never guesses a dimension. It flags it, drafts the question to the salesperson or the customer, and can bid on your default with the assumption written on the estimate, if you allow that.

Does it design retaining walls that need engineering?

It flags any wall over the height you set and lays out the block, grid and drainage your rules call for. Walls that need an engineer still go to your engineer.

Is this worth it for a small design-build company?

Use the calculator on this page with your own numbers. Most of the value is speed: the company that sends a clean design and a bid the same week usually builds the patio.
